Saskia and Simon´s birth story

As a foreign couple living in Medellin and expecting our first baby it wasn’t easy to find a doctor who had the same vision and ideas about giving birth. Coming from The Netherlands, the country with the highest percentage of natural home births accompanied by a midwife, we soon realized that what we are used to doesn’t exist here in Colombia. Culturally there are major differences in vision and tradition of how to give birth.

We wanted a natural birth, preferably in water and accompanied by a Doula. After some extensive research and trough my work as a yoga teacher we came in touch with several Doulas in Medellin. When we met Susana and Monica, who work together and are the perfect complimentary team, we instantly clicked and connected. The fact that Susana speaks fluently English was especially for my husband a big plus.

Via their network of like minded doctors, professors and pediatricians we found doctor Bernardo Agudelo as a replacement of our initial doctor.  A few weeks before the due date Susana and Monica provided informative sessions about the whole birthing process. They covered all aspects mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Which gave us the complete picture and the confidence we needed when the due date came closer. We got to know each other and discussed our ideas of the birthing experience. The last weeks before my due date Susana was highly involved, sending me encouraging messages and supporting me just when I needed it. She came by to give me a massage with essential oils and gemstones. Thanks to their gentle care and involvement I felt safe, secure and ready for the delivery.

Sunday morning my water broke and Monica was there immediately to take us to the hospital. We had chosen Clinica de Las Americas because it’s still the only clinic that allows a pool and several people in the delivery room. Susana attended another birth that night, and came straight out of the other clinic to accompany us . Without having to talk, both Doulas felt what I needed. They gave me guidance, massages, encouraging words, gentleness, sometimes leaving me alone when needed and they created a safe environment for us. They where not only there for me but also supported me husband. While my husband took care of the hospital paperwork one of the Doulas was all the time with me. The warm water in the pool was such a relief and helped me when the contractions where most intens. There was a total connection in the delivery room. The whole birth took about 8 hours and there was an intense, safe, beautiful and loving atmosphere.

The birth of our daughter went exactly as we had wished for, she was born healthy and without any medical interventions in the best environment possible. We are eternally grateful for Susana, Monica and Bernardo and highly recommend them to all future parents. Our next baby we want to have with them again:).

http://www.mamanatural.com.mx/2015/10/nacer-por-cesarea-tambien-es-una-forma-sagrada-de-nacer/

Y yo me encontraba ahí, partida, abierta, expuesta.
Huelo a leche, huelo a mamá.
